Where do the seeds come from?
The seeds for our Seedbars come from well-known European seed producers. We do not use any GMO seeds.
Where are the Seedbars produced?
The Seedbars are produced by Agrilution in Germany.
Where is the Plantcube produced?
The Plantcube is manufactured by a prestigious kitchen appliance manufacturer in Europe.
Does the Plantcube follow the cradle-to-cradle principle?
As the environment really matters to us and it is vital to use resources efficiently, the Plantcube is designed by the cradle-to-cradle principle so that after it has been used it can also be fully broken down into its individual parts. This makes it easier to reuse components and raw materials for other purposes. For example, there is no insulating foam, as you will find in refrigerators, and the Plantcube has no adhesive bonds.
Why do I need an App?
The App, which works on all Android and iOS devices or can be accessed via the browser on your PC or laptop, can be used to control the Plantcube. It is the control panel for the Plantcube and allows you to check on the condition of your plants and the Plantcube from anywhere at any time.
How much does a Seedbar cost?
Depending on the variety, a Seedbar costs between €4.99 and €8.99.
Can the Seedbar Holders go in the dishwasher?
Yes, at up to 50°C.
Can I use soil in the Plantcube?
No. The Plantcube is a hydroponic system, so no soil is required.
What does the nutrient solution contain?
Just like us, plants also need certain minerals like iron, magnesium and calcium. Our nutrient solution then contains another 11 minerals to enable healthy plant growth.
Why do my plants require the nutrient solution?
In order to grow. Neither people nor animals nor plants can survive on water alone.
How long will harvested Greens remain fresh for?
Instead of harvesting them, you can just place them in water-filled boxes, which will keep them fresh for more than a week.
How much can I harvest?
That depends on what you are growing. You can harvest around ± 1 kg each month.
How long do the Greens take from planting (as seeds) to harvesting?
This depends entirely on the variety, but roughly between 7 and 30 days. You can track the growth on the App at any time and you will also be notified when the Greens are ready to be harvested.
What does a typical growth cycle in the Plantcube look like?
Germination, growth, harvesting.
What makes plants red?
The red colouration of leaves and fruit is caused by what are known as anthocyanins (water-soluble plant pigments that occur in the cell sap of almost all taller plants and give plants a deep red, violet or blue colour). They have many positive effects on the mind and body.
What is the vitamin content of the Greens?
All our Greens boast particularly high nutrient levels. Here is a brief extract from our reference values (RDA = Recommended Daily Allowance): Coriander: Vitamin K (295% RDA/100 g) Tatsoi: Vitamin C (217% RDA/100 g) Dill: Vitamin A (154% RDA/100 g) Thyme: Iron (218% RDA/100 g) Parsley: Folic Acid B9 (38% RDA/100 g), Beta-Carotene (47% RDA/100 g)
Why do the plants from the Plantcube have a more intense taste?
The sooner after harvesting a plant is eaten, the more intense the taste will generally be. Factors such as the light, supply of water, climate and the composition of the nutrient solution also affect the plants. We have optimised these parameters to enhance the taste and deliver beneficial effects for your health.
How are the seeds embedded in the Seedbar?
The seeds are arranged evenly on the substrate and then fixed in place and covered by another layer of substrate. Once Seedbars get in contact with water they are activated and the germination process begins.
What do the Seedbars consist of?
Of our biodegradable substrate and seeds.
What makes the plants from the Plantcube different to the plants from your own balcony/garden?
They grow much faster because the Plantcube is not weather-dependent and requires no tending. In addition, we can deliver higher concentrations of healthy ingredients by adjusting the settings for the light, temperature and watering system - you can’t do this on a balcony or in a garden.
How will the range of plants on offer evolve?
We are constantly researching new varieties that will grow reliably and quickly in the Plantcube. We have already tested more than 150 varieties in our laboratory. We are always planning to add new varieties and expand our portfolio of Seedbars. We also want to offer further varieties of fruit and vegetables as soon as we can. The focus points are always the growing cycle, because you don’t want to have to wait 3 months for harvesting, and any extra user input that is needed such as pollinating the plants, which is essential for any fruit to grow.
What can I plant?
We currently offer 30 varieties. They are divided into different Lines (Dailies, Essentials and Chefs).
What is Vertical Farming?
Vertical Farming is bringing food production to our cities. Instead of growing plants in sprawling fields, Vertical Farming is boosting food production by stacking the cultivation areas on top of each other, inside buildings within cities. This increases the harvest yields per square metre and avoids any unnecessary transport. Farmland for supplying crops to the world’s constantly growing population using conventional farming methods is becoming ever more scarce. On top of that more people now live in cities than in rural regions. Vertical Farming now allows food to be supplied in a more sustainable way, exactly where it is needed - using less water and no pesticides.
What is hydroponics?
Hydroponics describes a way of growing plants in which the plants do not take root in the soil, but instead are watered with a balanced nutrient solution - this is also exactly what happens in the Plantcube. The plants are sustained on the Seedbar which has been specially developed by Agrilution. The benefits of hydroponics are the availability of minerals and water and the improved supply of oxygen to the plant roots, which is crucial for healthy plant growth.
How did you come up with the idea of the Plantcube?
Our two founders Max and Philipp are both very passionate about Vertical Farming. Read more about their vision on the “About us” page.
Do I need to be a gardener to be able to use a Plantcube?
Not at all, the Plantcube does everything for you. If anything does need doing, such as topping up the nutrients or water, the App will remind you.
Does the Plantcube mean no more trips to the supermarket?
The Plantcube allows you to enjoy an incredibly diverse and fresh plant-based diet, but it cannot provide all the daily calories you need.
Is the Plantcube cheaper than shopping in the supermarket?
It depends what you are comparing it to, which varieties you prefer, where you go shopping and in which season. Plants such as green basil tend to be cheaper in the supermarket - but only the Plantcube gives you the peace of mind that they have not been treated with pesticides. Other varieties from our range are hard to find in Western Europe and therefore tend to be more expensive in shops, if they are available at all. In addition, plants grown in the Plantcube are fresher, giving them a more intense flavour and higher concentrations of vital secondary substances (vitamins, minerals, antioxidants) compared to plants that have already been harvested because the majority of nutrients are lost within the first 24 hours after harvesting.
What are the advantages of the Plantcube?
The Plantcube is a self-contained system which is focused entirely on growing Leafy Greens, Herbs and Microgreens. Thanks to the ideal lighting, optimum temperature and automatic watering, the plants grow 2-3 times faster, contain more nutrients and have a more intense flavour.
How does the Plantcube work?
The Plantcube is connected to the internet and the App tells it where the user has planted specific plants. The various plant types are assigned specific parameters in our Cloud which ensures optimum growth. The Plantcube accesses them and thus knows when and how much watering is needed, what levels of lighting the plants require, and when what temperature needs to be applied.
How are the plants able to grow in the Plantcube?
The Plantcube constantly monitors the ambient conditions and automatically adjusts the temperature, lighting and watering to suit the needs of the plants, depending on their type and stage of growth.
What is the power consumption?
The power consumption is similar to that of a PC and varies in the same way depending on its condition and how it is used. At night, when the light is off, the Plantcube consumes much less power than during the day. But the biggest influence is the ambient temperature – the higher it is, the higher the power consumption too. Around 20°C is ideal. As there are no standardised testing methods for our product category yet, therefore the specific power consumption cannot yet be quantified. But we are working on this.
Can I leave the Plantcube on when I’m on holiday?
Yes, this is fine because the Plantcube can also survive for a while without any interaction. But if you are away for longer (> 3 weeks), it is advisable to switch off the Plantcube.
Where can I buy the Plantcube?
Right now, the Plantcube can simply be bought online on the Agrilution website or through one of our retail partners that can be found through the Showroom finder.
How much does the Plantcube weigh?
Approx. 70 kg, excluding plants and water.
Where can I operate my Plantcube?
The Plantcube can be operated at 16 to 32°C anywhere indoors where there is an internet connection and a power socket.
Can I integrate the Plantcube in my kitchen?
With standard measurements of 60 x 60 x 90 cm, the Plantcube can be integrated into a kitchen in lots of different ways, and it can of course also be operated free-standing. See also the installation drawings at the end of the product data-sheet.
Can I change the door hinge?
The door hinge can easily be fitted on the right or left within minutes.
What kind of light is used?
The LED modules were developed together with Osram specifically for the Plantcube. They include four different LED colours - dark blue, white, light red and dark red. These are the exact wavelengths from the solar spectrum which are crucial for healthy plant growth.
Does the Plantcube require a water supply?
No - there is a water tank in the bottom of the Plantcube. This allows a great deal of water to be saved.
How many litres does the Plantcube’s water tank hold?
15 litres, which on average will be enough for around 8 to 12 weeks.
What is the water consumption?
The water consumption of 100 litres a year is the lowest compared to all other growing methods. It is in fact many times lower than conventional farming. As a comparison - the average water consumption in Germany per person per day is around 127 litres.
